Stuart R. Stock

  • Research Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology
PhD (1983), University of Illinois

Stuart Stock focuses on understanding the role of different hierarchical scales spanning the nanometer to millimeter realm and how those operate in natural and engineered tissues, primarily mineralized tissues. These interests range from novel nanomedical approaches for treating various conditions to understanding how mineralized tissues achieve their extraordinary properties. Stock’s nanomedical studies include research collaborations with two SQI labs: nanomaterial approaches to mineralized tissue repair with the Stupp laboratory, and work on bone regeneration with the Hsu laboratory. Other Northwestern collaborations include investigations on tooth enamel nanostructure and on nerve repair in damaged cochlea.

Stock is one of the pioneers of X-ray micro-computed tomography (microCT) and position-resolved microbeam X-ray diffraction—two techniques he uses to probe different structural scales in bones and teeth.
