Equipment Specifications


The Zetasizer Nano ZSP from Malvern Panalytical is used for measurement of protein size, electrophoretic mobility, zeta potential of nanoparticles and can optionally be used for microrheology of protein and polymer solutions. It is equipped with integrated heating/cooling and allows for a chamber temperature range from 2 to 90° C.

Applications and Detection Limits

The Zetasizer Nano ZSP allows users to measure molecular weight, concentration and zeta potential of particles ranging in size from 0.3 to 10,000 nm.

Technique limitations are movements which are not Brownian, such as particle aggregation, sedimentation, and multiple scattering. DLS assumes that the particles are spherical; however you can still measure non-spherical particles.

Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis (NTA, Nanosight300 available at ANTEC) is complimentary to Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS, Zetasizer Nano ZSP) as it allows the determination of relative proportion of smaller particles in the sample. DLS measures size distribution and polydispersity of the sample; however, large particles in the sample have higher scattering light intensity and mask small particles; therefore, size distribution should be verified with NTA which can detect particle populations exhibiting a 20 nm difference.
